20 Scary Movies that you MUST Watch before All Hallows Eve

It's officially 20 days until Halloween!

As the clouds move in and the days become more gray, we here at Wooly Beast Naturals are going to start settling in for a long winter’s nap.  Autumn is our favorite time of year with Halloween being a big part of this affection.  The costumes, the candy, the lighting of more clean burning vegan soy candles, and, of course, the scary movies.  So, light up a limited edition soy candle, turn out the lights, and watch these *20 spine-chilling movies recommended by your favorite makers.

*In full disclosure, these movies are more suspense-based psychological thriller in nature because we believe these to be the best....I'm a psychologist by trade so what do you expect?

Our Top 20 Halloween Movie Picks:
  1. It - who DOESN’T think clowns aren’t creepy A.F.?  This is THE creep of all clowns. Skip the new miniaturized clown version and head for this classic.
  2. Amityville Horror - based on the book; this one may or may not be based on a true story, but we over here at Wooly Beast can’t get enough of these 80’s haunted house movies.
  3. Poltergeist - This 1980’s classic is a favorite.  And that clown doll scene? Pretty much sums up my greatest fears from childhood.
  4. The Exorcist - Doesn't get better than a demon possessed little girl with her head spinning and puking up split pea soup.
  5. The Shining - watch Jack Nicholson get cabin fever in this classic.  Side note: we visited The Stanley Hotel ,where some of the made for TV film was filmed (and was allegedly Stephen King's inspiration for the movie) and I swear that I had a brush with the spirit world in the underground caves.
  6. The Conjuring - you can’t go wrong with a good ‘based on a true story’ haunted house story; especially one that’s set in the 1970’s
  7. The Conjuring 2 - Demon Nun...that’s all I need to say.
  8. 28 Days Later - this pre-Walking Dead post apocalyptic horror story has zombies...isn’t that enough?
  9. I Am Legend - in the same vein, but in my opinion, more interesting, is this Will Smith post apocalyptic flick.  I especially like the relationship that he develops with the mannequin at the video store (similar to the one developed between Tom Hanks and Wilson in Cast Away).
  10. An American Werewolf in London - a classic 1980’s werewolf movie.
  11. The Ring - this supernatural thriller is set in Seattle (yay for our lovely Pacific NW gloom!) and aims to please with more dread and suspense than gore.
  12. The Adventures of Icabod and Mr. Toad - I’ve watched this every Halloween since I was a child.  This Disney movie tells the story of the Headless Horseman.
  13. Stranger Things - okay, so technically this isn’t a movie, but it’s just so good.  Why don’t you just go ahead and re-binge watch seasons 1 and 2?
  14. Children of the Corn - one of Stephen King’s greatest; you can’t go wrong with creepy children from the 1970’s.
  15.  Bram Stoker’s Dracula - before sparkly vampires came the real deal….this one is sure to please.
  16. The Lost Boys -  if it isn’t clear, we are BIG fans of vampires….especially when it’s a “gang” of them led by a 1980’s-clad young Kiefer Sutherland.
  17. Hocus pocus - this one is just plain fun with Bette Midler, as the Sanderson Sisters.
  18. Watcher in the Woods - this 1980 occult suspense with Bette Davis really brings me back to my childhood - I used to rent it from the video store (please do not ask what that is) on the regular and watch it while eating sweet and sour cotton candy (anyone remember this??)
  19. When a Stranger Calls and When a Stranger Calls back - there’s a 70’s and a 90’s version...this premise (babysitter being watched while alone and then being stalked years later), really freaks me out.  This psychological thriller also has an unexpected twist in the end.
  20. Halloween - duh
